Why You’re So Inconsistent (And How to Fix It)

A common problem I see when coaching is inconsistency.

Someone has an insight.
They implement a new strategy.
Results improve.
Momentum builds.

And then… they stop.

Not because it stopped working.
Not because it failed.

They stop while it’s working.

That’s not a discipline issue.
That’s a power issue.

When you don’t understand your own potency — your ability to influence outcomes — you will eventually sabotage your own momentum.

You’ll call it complacency.
You’ll call it distraction.
You’ll call it “life happening.”

But underneath it all, you devalued your own influence.

And that always has a cost.

The Real Cost of You Stopping

Let’s make this practical.

Think back to a habit, strategy, or mindset shift you implemented that worked.

What were the results?
Were you improving week to week?
Were you making more money?
Was your team more aligned?
Were conversations smoother?
Were clients responding better?

Now answer this:

At what point did you stop?

What triggered it?

Boredom?
Comfort?
A minor inconvenience?
A temporary distraction?

Now quantify it.

Did revenue dip? By how much?
Did performance plateau?
Did morale shift?

If you hadn’t stopped, how much further ahead would you be right now?

Was it just you that was impacted — or a team? A department? An entire organization?

Calculate the devastation of you stopping that one thing.

Because there is devastation.

Inconsistency doesn’t just affect you. It affects everything connected to you.

Now Be Honest

What did you stop it for?

Was it truly necessary?

Yes, there are moments in life where real issues must be handled. Emergencies happen. Transitions happen.

But I want you to name three instances where:

You knew what to do.
You implemented it.
It worked.
And you stopped anyway.

I guarantee when you look back, at least two out of three of those reasons were not valuable enough to justify the long-term cost.

That’s not laziness.

That’s self-debasement.

You lowered the value of your own influence.

The Pattern You’re Missing

It’s not what happens that determines outcomes.

It’s what happens and how you respond that determines the result.

Nine times out of ten, your response is what created the success in the first place.

The planning.
The intentional conversations.
The discipline.
The consistency.
The standards you upheld.

Not luck.
Not coincidence.
Not “timing.”

You.

But because you didn’t fully own your power in creating the result, you felt detached from maintaining it.

So you stopped.

How to Fix It

First, reclaim your potency. Acknowledge that your actions produce results. Write down what you did, how you did it, and what changed because of it. See the cause and effect clearly.

Second, quantify the cost of stopping. Numbers remove denial. Calculate the money lost, growth stalled, opportunities missed, influence weakened. Make it real. When the cost becomes visible, inconsistency becomes harder to justify.

Third, separate life events from self-sabotage. Ask yourself: was this truly unavoidable, or did I disengage because momentum felt uncomfortable? Growth often triggers discomfort. Discomfort is not a signal to stop.

Fourth, reimplement immediately. Don’t overthink it. Don’t wait for Monday. Don’t wait for the perfect reset. Reimplement what you know works. Consistency compounds.

Fifth, stop creating chaos because you’re bored. If you’re bored, go to the movies. Take up a new hobby. Start a class. But don’t dismantle systems that are working. Don’t disrupt growth because your nervous system craves stimulation. Chaos is expensive.

Final Thought

Your environments will not reach their full potential if you consistently show up watered down.

You have more influence than you admit.

And when you understand that, inconsistency becomes harder to tolerate — because now it’s not just about productivity.

It’s about stewardship.

Reimplement what works. Stop negotiating with your own power. Don’t find reasons to stop.
